DOOD [02 Apr 2007|11:51pm]
ZOMG guys, I'm actually a finalist in the Mugglenet book 7 cover contest. There's some really cool submissions that made it to the top 20, and I'm seriously happy to have made it along with them. Anyway, I guess the winner is being determined by a popular vote, so if anyone feels inclined to vote for me, it's "Liz's entry." Or, you know, vote for whoever, because there's lots of excellent art to choose from. Anyway: To the finalist page

[ mood | happy ]

After a day of rest, I return with Lulu as Gun Mage (aka Blue Mage or Dark Gunner, apparently). I'm really happy with this one overall. But as I was doing this I noticed that there's not a whole lot you can do with this costume. All three characters have pretty much the same shirt (length is slightly different) and skirt (edge of skirt is cut differently), and the gun is the same for all three as well. So there wasn't a whole lot I could do to make this Lulu's costume instead of any old girl. But I kept the curlicue thing going, and the necklaces, so I guess that's alright. Gun Mage is just boring I guess. I'm looking forward to Thief tomorrow; that ought to be interesting.

First thing to go: Those hideous halrequin stockings.Collapse )

I finished this one early today. Probably because I was awake way earlier than I had planned on and had nothing else to do really. Except dishes. Anyway, my project today was Lulu's gunner costume if she hadn't started making babies with Wakka (WTF) and had come treasure hunting instead. So, her v-neck drape thing makes an appearance, as do her fishnet stockings (both from FFX). I retained the curlicue design from the bigass gauntlets in her mage costume and put it on her belt instead. I didn't color this one, but just know that almost everything is black, with the exception that her half-skirt goes from black to purple to white. I didn't want to risk fucking everything up by going crazy with the black ink. Anyway:

Oh, and she totally gets a Lady Derringer.Collapse )

Alright, it's day two and I haven't slacked off yet (yayz), so here's piece number two. The story behind it is that FFX-2 was lame. One thing that bugged me a lot was Paine. I mean, she's an okay character I guess, but really why did she suddenly materialize in FFX's universe? Anyway, I think things would be better if Lulu were there too. Maybe not better enough to make the game not an utter piece of crap, but better. Which brings me to the dress spheres. Each character is capable of doing many different jobs, and to change between jobs in a fight, the character changes her outfit. These outfits are called dress spheres (because FFX-world has a thing for spheres) and there is one for each job. So this is Lulu in the black mage dress sphere, which I would assume to be her default costume. In keeping with the style of some of the changes in character appearance from FFX to X-2, I shortened her hair and had her using one of Yuna's wands from FFX. I colored it with the paint bucket tool because I am way to lazy to do full coloring after spending all day inking the damn thing to begin with...it doesn't look all that impressive though. Maybe I ought to have left it just ink. Oh well, w/e, here it is:

Lulu, get back here and make Rikku stfu!Collapse )

Art Post 1 [18 Jan 2007|10:17pm]
[ mood | artistic ]

So last night I decided that I'm being overly lazy and unproductive. In an effort to suck less, I'm going to try to do at least one piece of artwork a day for the next month. I'm not going to expect masterpieces out of myself since this is more an exercise in creativity and getting off my butt than producing amazing art. But that said, I'm kind of happy with my first piece. I think this month will be a good chance for me to actually put down on paper a bunch of ideas that have been kicking around in my head for a while, and this is one of them. I've always thought there should be a female character option for the game Halo/Halo 2. Especially for Xbox live, because you can customize so many other things about your character. Anyway, this is my female Halo 2 character.

She sort of reminds me of Samus...Collapse )

First art of the new year, and it's Fran from FFXII!

My boyfriend basically wants to have little hybrid human/viera babies with her, so I drew him a picture. Tried out some new pens that are really tiny (like, .1mm tip) and it was awesome. Anyway, she's here under the cut.

Title: Autumn Leaves
Rating: G
Notes: I was thinking of the song "Autumn Leaves" today and made a little painting of sorts. I'm trying out a new style, and so far I'm happy with it. Anyway, this "scene" is taking place during the Azkaban years.

Kind of large picture...Collapse )

Today's "wtf?" moment [30 Oct 2006|01:31pm]
[ mood | amused ]

So about a year and a half ago, I was in Texas visiting my boyfriend, and while I was there he decided he was going to cheat on me with this girl from Spain. Long story short, everything blew over in a couple weeks and when I had calmed down I sent the girl an email apologizing for becoming angry at her. She wrote back saying it was understandable, I wished her the best, she said "likewise" and we all went on our merry little ways. It's not like we had anything further to discuss, so I haven't heard from her since. Except today in my inbox I got a forwarded/chain letter from her detailing the proper way to dispose of cooking oil after you fry something*. Huh?? The best part is, the whole email was in Spanish...she doesn't even know I speak Spanish, since all of our previous exchanges were in English. I'm sure she just clicked on my name accidentally in her address book or something, but I just find it mildly amusing.

*And if anyone cares, you're apparently supposed to pour the oil into a plastic container and then throw it in the trash rather than dumping it down the sink. Probably a good idea.

I can see the stars again [14 Oct 2006|10:47pm]
[ mood | content ]

It rained tonight, finally. The West Wind blew a day early this year, on Sept 14th, but it's still been pretty during the day. Tonight though, I put on PoA so I could work on some knitting, and it must have rained while I was watching the movie. I went outside and it was cool and the sky was clear and there was even a little moisture in the air from the rain. It's actually more stuffy inside than out, for once. I love standing on my porch and looking at the stars; it's most of the reason I still smoke from time to time (although I've only gone through half a pack of cigarettes this year so far...yay me). Anyway I haven't been able to chill on my porch for a long time since it's been so hot and the mosquitos have been around all summer. Gah I'm doing a really rambling shitty job of it, but the point of all this is to say I'm so glad it's cool and I get to start standing on my porch at night again.

My new pseudo-sister-in-law (daughter of the woman Gandalf married, only he's not really my dad) had a baby two Tuesdays ago. He's so cute and absolutely the tiniest human being I've ever seen in my life. I mean I knew babies were small but I'd never actually seen one that just got born before. I saw this one on the very same day he was born, and it was...interesting. I had some mild panicky bad feelings the first time I saw him, but the more I saw him the easier it got. I don't know how long it will take me to be comfortable again about babies or marriage, if I ever will be at all. But I like this baby and I like his mom, and I'm taking this opportunity to knit again. Babies are great to knit for.

A week of (minor) victories [30 Sep 2006|09:58pm]
[ mood | happy ]

Little things that I'm happy about this week:

1. I did battle with Imperial County, and I think I may have won this time! I may have actually secured two encroachment permits, which is the first step in getting building permits. The best thing is that I think I finally understand the process and order of everything that has to be done to put a house in. There's a lot of running back and forth between Public Works, Planning, and Building, but it makes a bit more sense now. I'll find out sometime next week, probably, whether we have been issued the permits or not. *Crosses fingers*

2. I made a slightly sad but yummy Golden Chiffon cake. It was beautiful, but then I took it for a rather long car ride where it slid amongst pillows and suitcases for several hours. Rowena and I dubbed it our "Sad Cake" since it got all squished and the icing got melty. But it tasted good.

3. I did not lose money playing blackjack this weekend. In fact, I won $100 (w00t).

4. Gandalf's wedding was beautiful and I only cried like a girl once, and I'm pretty sure that no one saw me.

5. I was able to have a phone conversation with a prospective house-buyer entirely in Spanish. I only had to use "Lo siento, no entiendo" once.

6. I made a swingin' Coffee Torte for the AA potluck tonight. It was Don's one-year "birthday," and there was a big old celebration...because we like to eat stuff and hang out. So I made two layer coffee torte with orange filling and mocha frosting. It came out looking much better than my previous Sad Cake.

Somehow, reading manga in Spanish just gives a whole new dimension of fun to it. I'm rereading Marmalade Boy, only it's the Spanish version that I found in La Cachanilla the other day for 55 pesos. I have no idea how much that actually is, but I got rid of my Mexican change by buying Marmalade Boy for me and a Fruits Basket one for Rowena. Maybe it'll motivate her to learn Spanish. It's lame though, I bought Vol.8 because it's my favorite one but now I want to get the whole series...wah, I'm so easily distracted by teh anime ;D

I went to Mexico! And I spoke Spanish! And they didn't point and laugh and say "Gringa!!" I took 4 years of high school Spanish, so I know how to speak it and I understand it pretty well, but I used to hate speaking it in front of actual Mexican or other native Spanish speakers. But I finally caved a few weeks ago now that we're doing a lot of business in Mexico, and now that Gandalf's getting married to a Mexican woman. But yeah, I successfully got glasses for Rowena and translated her eye exam, found her a pair of shoes in the mall, ordered some burritos, and got her hair and nails done for the upcoming wedding. I got my nails done too, for some fool reason; I'm regretting it now though. I can barely type and I have no idea how I'm going to do kickboxing if I can't properly make a fist. But I could at least make an icon.

Seriously though, sometimes I wish I lived in Mexico just so I could eat burritos all day. It's so retarded that there is nowhere to get a decent burrito over here in the Valley.

[ mood | depressed ]

I went to the gym tonight for the first time since summer started...my god, I haven't been this out of shape since I don't remember when. It's so pathetic. I'm going to have to remedy that since I was really pretty strong for a while last year when I was working out every day. There's a new class at the gym which I hope will help with that; it's called Combat Cardio. Which just sounds cool all by itself, but I guess it's kickboxing only instead it being mostly like dancing with some kicking, there's actual fighting...at least, with punching bags and pads and stuff. It starts next week and I am so there.

Afterwards I went to the mall to get a dress for Gandalf's wedding. I'm already making a dress to wear, a bias-cut thingy made of awesome suede that I got for $2.47/yd at Walmart (win!). However, the more I work with it, the more I have this really overpowering feeling that "suede" and "bias" should never be used in the same sentence, so I wanted to get a backup dress in case it looks like crap. I found an awesome brown dress (brown is my version of black) for only $18. Win again!

So what do I do to finish off my triumphant night? I come home and play Final Fantasy X and CRY MY EYES OUT. Oh my god, I just got to Zanarkand and it's so freaking sad. I sat and watched while Dorian played through the game a few years ago, but I totally don't remember feeling this sad at that time. Maybe it's because I'm actually playing it myself now, I dunno. Either way, I just shut it off because I didn't feel emotionally ready to fight the next boss...that's so pathetic ;)

Snakes on a (MF) Plane! [20 Aug 2006|09:35pm]
[ mood | giggly ]

I saw it! Haha, it's just one of those movies that I couldn't not go see when it came out. I'm not going to try to write a review, but may I just say that it was way better than I thought it would be. It was a really intense movie too...I was sort of shaking afterwards, when I relaxed after being so tense for 2 hours or however long. Because OMG how can anyone be calm when there's snakes biting people constantly?? I couldn't believe they had the snakes attack people so graphically. Well, I mean I can believe it of course, but still. It was a bit yuck at times. I brought Rowena to see it (albeit hesitantly, as she is only 12), but she didn't appear to be bothered by anything except the bathroom scene. So that was good, I was worried that she would become traumatized or something, but she really wanted to go.

The only thing that kind of sucked is that I live in a retarded area of California where apathy abounds. No one clapped or yelled stuff or did anything remotely fannish. In fact, there were only about 10 people in the whole theatre. Even when I went to see the GOF and POTC2 midnight premiers, NOTHING.

And one more thing: OH MY GOD THE BOY IN THE MUSIC VIDEO AT THE END!!! The one with the long-ish brown hair. It's been quite a while since anyone caught my eye like that. I had to go watch the music video some more on youtube because...wow.

Shirt [16 Aug 2006|09:22pm]
[ mood | accomplished ]

Whee, the shirt is finished and it didn’t fall apart or turn out too small or otherwise look like crap. Yay! I think I picked good colors too, although I hate the buttons with the fire of…only about 400 suns, but still! Poo on Walmart for only having 2 racks of buttons, and none that matched my piping. These ones need to be about 1/3 of the size they are; currently they just look too big and take attention away from the collar and cross-chest seam thingy. I am so getting new buttons next time I go to a real fabric store.

Please to be helping Cavegirl [16 Aug 2006|01:46am]
[ mood | sleepy ]

Okay, I need everybody's help. My little sister wants to go to a big old anime convention in October. She's only 12 years old though, and I don't know if she's too young to go to something like that. I'm mostly worried about how crazy people sometimes get at big events like that, and also the Hentai. I know she wouldn't go looking for trouble, or grown-up things, but I just think it would be too easy for her to stumble into a situation she shouldn't be in. Her dad is sort of leaving it up to me to "check it out" and decide if it would be appropriate for her to go or not.

Anyway, the reason I'm bringing this up is because I've never actually been to a convention, and I'm sure some of you out there have. So those of who've been to one of these things: Am I worried for nothing, or does it really get crazy? If she was your kid/sister, would you let her go?

Wow, this is the first time I've actually been inconvenienced by not having a paid account. A poll would have been a nice fast way to put this out there. Ah well, thanks f-list :)

Imperial County - 1, Eroica - 0 [15 Aug 2006|01:27am]
[ mood | creative ]

I need a bumper sticker that says "Imperial County Public Works Pwned My Ass." I had a horribly unproductive day at the County. The mobilehome dealership I work for is trying to convert some property into a temporary storage area. Not a big deal, no building, minimal landscaping additions, basically we just wanted to make sure they weren't going to fine us for parking some homes on our own property. Last week it looked like the Powers That Be were going to be cool and just make us plant some trees and we'd be good to go in about a week. But the Public Works Department decided to be bitches and make us get a "drainage plan" to make sure that when it rains, as it does about once a year, it doesn't flood the street by our property. Since it hasn't done that before, and since we're not changing anything, I fail to see why we need this. But anyway, that proccess takes at least a month and costs upwards of $2500. THEN they're making us build a driveway that extends 100 feet into the property, and 100 feet on each side of the entrance. However, our property is only 150 x 120, so our supposed driveway would go onto other peoples' property as well as the major highway that is our cross street. Somehow I don't think CalTrans will appreciate that. And we have to apply for a permit to build the seemingly impossible driveway, which will take at least a week and cost another $400. Not to mention the cost of the driveway itself, once we actually get the permit to build the thing they themselves are requiring us to build. Only in California would a person have to go through all that crap to park something on their private property. I don't think we're going to end up having a storage yard.

The Good News: At least while I was in town on my "County business," I got to go to Walmart and buy fabric. Project Runway has addled my brain to the point where I'm thinking I can sew things. I even braved the spiders in the garage to dig out my sewing machine.

Oh yay, another song meme. [11 Aug 2006|01:24am]
[ mood | tired ]

Open your playlist, pick songs that start with each letter of your username, but, the songs have to mean something to you. Don't just pick a song because it starts with a letter in your username. Post the list to your journal, if you want you can explain why the songs are important to you, but it's not required. Include your favorite line(s). Tag at least five other people to do the meme.

I guess I tag whoever feels like doing thisCollapse )
